Passing

When considering passing another vehicle, drivers should evaluate whether the maneuver is necessary, legal, and safe. If any of these criteria are not met, the pass should not be attempted. Safe passing requires an unobstructed view and sufficient clearance, avoiding areas with limited visibility such as crests or curves.

Precautions for Passing:

  • Check both front and rear views before moving into the passing lane, ensuring it’s clear and legal.
  • Allow more time to pass larger vehicles like trucks, typically three to five seconds longer than cars.
  • Pass large trucks on the left and do not linger beside them.
  • Confirm you can see the passed vehicle’s wheels in your rearview mirror before merging back.

Careful Lane Changing:

  • Frequent lane changes increase the risk of accidents.
  • Use mirrors and shoulder checks for a comprehensive view of traffic.
  • Change lanes cautiously and within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Legal multiple lane changes should be executed one at a time, not simultaneously across several lanes.

Prohibited Passing Situations:

  • Passing on the Left:Only pass on the left when it’s safe and doesn’t interfere with oncoming traffic. Avoid passing near bridges, viaducts, tunnels, intersections, or railroad crossings if your view is obstructed within 100 feet.
  • Passing on the Right:It’s permissible when the vehicle ahead is turning left, in areas with wide unobstructed pavements, or on one-way streets.
  • Visibility and Speed:Ensure clear visibility of the lane you’re moving into and adjust your speed to make a safe pass. It’s illegal and unsafe to pass at excessive speeds.
  • Returning to the Lane:Make sure to return to the right lane with enough clearance from oncoming vehicles, typically 200 feet.
  • Space for Passing:Confirm there’s adequate space to pass without speeding.
  • Blind Spots and Mirrors:Check blind spots over your shoulder and use mirrors before passing.
  • Road Markings:Obey no passing signs and double yellow lines, which indicate no passing zones.

Always consider whether passing is necessary, legal, and safe before attempting the maneuver. If any of these conditions are not met, do not pass.
