Railroad Crossings
Despite trains being loud and traveling on fixed tracks, accidents at railroad crossings are tragically common.
At Railroad Crossings:
- Always look and listen for trains from both directions.
- Approach intersections without barriers cautiously.
- The number of tracks can be identified by signs on the crossbuck or gate.
Stopping Distance:
- Stop at least 15 feet from the tracks if:
- A person or signal indicates a train is coming.
- You see or hear a train.
- It’s required by law as explained in Section 316.1575 of the Florida Statutes.
Actions to Avoid:
- Do not drive around lowered traffic gates.
- After a train passes, check for additional trains before proceeding.
- If your vehicle stalls on the tracks, try to move it. If not possible, call the police and provide the crossing location for them to alert the railroad.
- In case of an approaching train and a stalled vehicle, exit and move away from the tracks at a 45-degree angle towards the train’s direction to avoid being in the path of debris if a collision occurs.
